Global Warming

So I found an old issue of Vanity Fair (from May which in magazine age is pretty old) they were billing as "The Green Issue" so I bought it. Just a sucker for environmental slants I guess.

Well in case you missed it Al Gore is back. Not as a candidate (yet and he shouldn't go that far in my opinion) but as a powerful voice for the environment. The man has been on talk shows, was the darling of Sundance with the documentary An Inconvenient Truth by David Guggenheim and I don't think he's finished just yet.

Way back in 1992 he wrote this book called Earth In The Balance which did read a bit like a PhD dissertation but nonetheless sounded a mass marketed call about the future of the environment (or the lack thereof). Republicans jumped all over him calling him an extremist and so forth. Current Prez Bush even went so far as to ridicule Al in the 200 campaign over hybrids. Guess who is laughing now Mr-tax-cut-for-buying-a-hybrid-we've-got-to-end-the-US-dependency-on-foreign-oil? Oh well, better late than never I suppose. And finally! The current administration is starting to get the point that there just might be something to this whole "global warming thing". Maybe.

The magazine has some eye-opening graphics about the state of some of our major coastal cities once the temperature rises and the sea levels also rise cities that include New York, Washington DC, San Francisco and even Martha's Vineyard and the Hamptons (which ought to get the attention of at least a few wealthy Republicans).

There are all sorts of resources on the Web, every pro and con you can imagine. All sorts of myths, outraged Republicans and over the top liberals. One interesting site is http://www.fightglobalwarming.com which has a calculator so you can see how many tons of carbon little old you is contributing to this mess. They offer a free kit to help you cut back on such things but right now they are out of them. Of course.

To my mind there are a lot of other things we need to be worrying about, some of which will ultimately have a positive impact on global warming - such as alternative fuels, hyrbrids, deforestization, etc. If you can't get someone's attention by pointing that by the year 2100 things will be pretty nasty appeal to their wallet: oil is expensive/ Drilling in Alaska is not going to solve the problem. We simply need to invest in other means to heat/cool our homes and get us from point A to point B.

In any case the May issue of Vanity Fair is a good read. Even if you don't agree with Al Gore and friends, it will make you think and that is the first step toward change.
