We Do Have a Constitution, Right?

Time to get political again.

An editorial in the paper today made me think. I don't normally like this guy - he's ultra conservative and just a plain pain in the butt but today... he had a point.

I've been reminded that while campaigning for office our President opposed the McCain-Feingold Bill saying that it violated the Constitution and restricted free speech. Once elected though he signed it into law. He didn't have to, he could have vetoed the thing but nope, he signed it. So if he believed the bill would make a law that was unconstitutional didn't he violate his oath of office to uphold the Constitution? Kinda looks that way folks. And for the literalists out there he did violate his oath.

Mr. Protector of Free Speech has created "free speech zones" where protestors have to stand anytime the Prez appears anywhere so that they aren't interfering with his public appearance - translation so they are out of view of the media. Oh yeah and if you complain or protest you're a fascist. What the heck that has to do with disagreeing with the administration I have no idea. If we criticize Bush and Company we're just like the folks in the early days of WWII who tried to appease the Nazi regime. Say what? Which by the way is not fascism, it is covering your butt out of fear.

Reminder: Congress did not declare war on Iraq, they authorized the use of force. There's a difference.

Then there's that pesky fourth amendment that the Prez stomps all over by issuing his own arrest warrants for people anywhere in the world and holding them for as long as he likes without judicial process of any sort because all he has to do is use the word: terrorist and he gets what he wants.

News Flash to King George: Only Congress has the power to declare war according to the Constitution and they did not declare war therefore we are not officially at war so you don't get to claim supreme power due to war. One of the reasons that Congress has to declare the war is to keep the tyrants from running amok and trying to bully the rest of the world.

Is any of this starting to sound like Viet Nam yet, or is it just me?

What's really scary? Last year the American Bar Association took a poll and only 55% of adults could identify the three branches of government. It doesn't say but I wonder how many even knew there where three branches of government let alone why. For the record that's the Executive, Judicial and Legislative. They are supposed to provide checks and balances on each other. They try but when the courts (Judicial) told the Prez (Executive) that is military tribunal desires were unconstitutional his gang immediately disagreed and starting trying to find loopholes.
