Comic Book Memories

It doesn't seem all THAT long ago that I moved to Ohio. But it has been nearly 17 years.

I came here from Poughkeepsie NY leaving a very fun job with WaRP graphics (the publishers of ElfQuest) to get married and start a new life. When I arrived I kept up my comic connections and wrote reviews of independent artists/writers/publishers and their work for the now defunct Indy Magazine (among other publications). I met some fabulous people along the way both via WaRP and Indy.

Yes I am a girl AND a lapsed collector of comic books. Suddenly I feel awful for not having set foot in a comic shop in years. Does this mean being a lapsed comic book collector is akin to being a lapsed member of a religious group?

Today I saw a post on Facebook from someone I met during my comic book publishing days, someone whose work I enjoyed a great deal. One of Terry Moore's characters from Strangers in Paradise (Darcy Parker) has made the list of the Top Seven Most Evilest Lesbian Exes (inspired by the new film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). Check out the list at the After Ellen Web Site http://www.afterellen.com/people/2010-08-19-counting-down-the-seven-evilest-lesbian-and-bisexual-exes

This got me thinking. Wondering what some of these writers and artists that alas I have lost touch with over the years are up to now. Some I have reconnected with via Facebook others have drifted away. Regardless all were and hopefully still are extremely talented. Some are gone from this life now too: Drew Hayes and Barry Blair were amazing people and creators and we've all been cheated out of the great work they would have done had they remained with us.

I miss that world on occasion. I miss new issues of Strangers in Paradise, Bone, Poison Elves and so many others. Not necessarily the craziness of the trade shows but the people I met at those shows. The folks I interviewed by phone. The work I reviewed for the magazine. The PR work I did for Sirius (publisher of Poison Elves) It is a world I've drifted away from and I really should not have lost touch with its denizens. But life happens, spouses die, jobs change, you change an address (or three) and you stop having time to go to the trade show in Chicago or even Columbus.

But I am also blessed in having reconnected with folks via Facebook. And am looking forward to travelling to see some amazing comic folks Down Under this December. It was great to see Terry's post today. A blast from the past that brings back fond comic book memories.
