Wouldn't You Know It

Okay, so I finally have time to work in the yard this weekend. In fact tonight I intend to mow the lawn.

Wouldn't you know it? It is almost 90 degrees out there.

The schedule couldn't possibly work out so that the mowing could happen when it was in the mid-to-high 70s. Oh no! So I get to look forward to an evening of bugs, heat rash, asthma and hay fever (from the cut grass which is worse when it is muggy). Betcha I'm nearly out of gas too.

A friend of mine who has had a tough couple of years finally started to have things turn around. The deadbeat ex-hubby finally has to pay the back child support and maintenance that he avoided by changing jobs and neglecting to notify the new employer of the court order to garnish the wages, she got a decent job (not great but solid), school is going well, the daughter has graduated from high school and the bills were slowly getting caught up. Heck, she was so caught up that she is now only $100 behind in the rent.

Wouldn't you know it? The landlord is moving to evict her.

Never mind that the place is a dump. Things that need fixing were promised to be fixed when she moved in 4 years ago. There is mold the size of redwoods growing the walls and under the floors (daughter has asthma, this isn't good). It is a mess. So Mr. Jerkface Landlord pops by last week going on about fixing this and that and never says a word about the rent problem. Keep in mind he has all her contact numbers (family members' too), has been kept informed from day one of the financial situation and has thus far been understanding. Now WHAM! She's got to get outta there. Gee, think he wants to sell the place? Maybe he has another renter lined up?

Oh sure she could fight it, but she can't afford any more legal bills. And sure she could spend less per month if she bought instead of renting but with no downpayment and her credit history tied the deadbeat ex-hubby (who filed bankruptcy a while ago) she couldn't get a loan if her life depended on it. Heck she probably makes too much now for assistance. So she turns, as we all do to family who have been helpful (without being asked) this past year.

Wouldn't you know it? That well has gone dry. The sister has a bug up her behind about who-knows-what and there's no help there. I can't help 'cuz I'm two states away.

It is the "wouldn't you know it" situations in life that make me wonder why good people, hardworking people keep getting kicked in the head in this country. You try to do the right thing and WHAM! a kick in the head.

Some days it just isn't worth chewing through the restraints.
