People Exhaust Me
Too much negative energy is exhausting. And Tuesday night it was all negativity all the time. I'm still tired.
Holding grudges, being spiteful, engaging in the whole us vs. them game... and this is among a group of people who all belong to the same organization. Local political stupidity. The old you're with us or against us mentality and if you haven't been one of them your entire life woe be unto you! Idiots.
If we fight among ourselves we accomplish nothing.
There is a new chairperson (okay it has been a year-ish but new enough) who wants to introduce change slowly, carefully and thus there is ridicule from those who want things fixed right now. The reason given is they have spent years "kissing ass" and are fed up and the new guy is supposed to be able to fix everything immediately.
There are parallels to the way people are reacting to Obama's lack of widespread, immediate sweeping change in less than a year although this isn't a national situation here in the middle of nowhere.
My style in committee work is diplomacy, a kind of bipartisan let's all work together to achieve common goals (because you accomplish more together than not) and such and this is putting me in conflict with more "scorched earth" kind of progressive folks.
I agree with the chairman's take on change coming slowly apparently this is not satisfactory to everyone. They had thought I was with "them" but they may now be annoyed with me for staying neutral. I also think the chair is trying to bring a more professional feel to the group and that is going to rock some boats.
This is the first committee I've worked with that while claiming to follow Roberts Rules of Order does not provide the membership with copies of the minutes prior to asking people to approve them. The secretary reads them aloud and then we are supposed to vote. That hardly seems proper. I was sworn in to uphold the by-laws but I wasn't given a copy of them. So I've asked the chairman for copies of the by-laws and (being new and playing dumb) have asked why we don't email the minutes out prior to the monthly meeting. We'll see what response I get.
I got involved because the current (new) chair gave the organization a fresh feel, a positive feel. I think he has a huge uphill battle on his hands. I hope he succeeds and I am going to help as much as I can.
If I don't get so frustrated that they drive me away.
