Hurry Up and Tell Us Already!!!!

The suspense is killing me.

Okay, not literally "killing me" but distracting me, making me wonder, getting impatient here ...

What over you ask? Well it ain't what Santa's bringing me for Christmas! Nope, it is Mars Rover Curiosity's "big find".

It appears that SAM (Sample Analysis on Mars) a piece of equipment on the rover found something that has mission control "very excited". But they aren't talking. In fact the date of release of info keeps getting pushed back.

Bloggers are going nuts, conspiracy theorists are ranting and raving, even Fox News has gotten into the act. In fact: John Grotzinger, the Project Scientist for Curiosity, said in an interview, "This data is gonna be one for the history books. It's looking really good." And thus he launched the imaginations of everybody out there.

What worries me isn't that this is some ground-breaking find that will put theories and conservative Christians into a tail spin ... rather I'm concerned that after all the hype whatever this is will appear to Joe Public as B-O-R-I-N-G and therefore be seen as much ado about nothing. Oh sure, the nerds and space geeks will go ga-ga but the rest of the planet will yawn and turn back to their favorite reality show. ANY find that confirms a theory heretofore unconfirmable is cool stuff. ANY find that takes our understanding of our planetary neighbor in a new direction is cool stuff.

But let's not bet that the camera picked up Marvin the Martian and his Illudium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator.

We've been here before too. Remember the bacteria that NASA announced it had found? Life certainly but hardly War of the Worlds, John Carter of Mars or even Marvin alien life. And oh by the way, that find has mostly been debunked now anyway. Remember the find that galactic astronomers had been searching to discover for decades? No not aliens ... a young galactic supernova. Really cool yes, but only if you're interested in the science of it.

Let's no oversell whatever this is okay? NASA folk you guys are scientists, not public relations specialists. (Be happy to come on board and work for you, can send you the resume tomorrow) We want people to stay interested in science, in space exploration, in NASA ... especially the President and Congress since they determine the funding but do not oversell the find or you risk shooting yourselves in the foot. Again.

Yes I want to know! I want to know now! I think all the science is very, very cool. But I am a space geek so of COURSE I think it is very, very cool.

I also think the general public needs to find a way to get excited about science, about space again. I find it rather sad actually that the last time we were really, really excited was when we thought "the enemy" was going to beat us to the moon. There are all kinds of really cool things going on at NASA and we should be paying attention.

So just tell us already what the latest find is!!! Please?
