Lima Ohio Rant & Rave
I discovered a blog the other day about Lima, posted by someone who doesn't live in Lima but lives close to Lima. Mostly it is a crime blog. I can see where folks might find that interesting but I can also see where it might be inflammatory and counterproductive.
I do live in Lima. I wasn't born here or raised here. I have lived in much larger cities, I have lived in cities the same size and I have lived in smaller towns. I can honestly say that Lima is one of the better places I have ever lived.
Yes it has its problems but every city and town does.
Yes there is crime, hello! crime is everywhere in one form or another. That is a sad fact of life and the human condition. Desperate people are going to do desperate things. Stupid people are going to do stupid things. People who are ill are going to do things in an effort to get that next fix or whatever.
People often do not appreciate what is in their own backyard. They just don't see it. They don't participate in or attend community theatre productions, visit art galleries, tour the museums, attend the symphony, see a show at the local civic center or arena or wherever traveling productions perform, they don't go to church and community festivals or fairs and if they do... they complain.
Lima Ohio has all these things. Most cities of 40,000-ish do not. There are many opportunities for people to get involved in the arts, in the community (good Lord there are over 20 neighborhood organizations!), you name it!
Lima has affordable housing. No where else I have lived would have given me the opportunity to own my own home as a single person with a HUGE yard. No where. And in a good neighborhood too. Heck the Mayor lives down the street!
As to the crime in Lima. Yes there is more in Lima than other communities in the area. Hello! Lima is the largest city in the 10 county region, the more people you have the more incidents you're going to have. But read the police calls every day in the paper many of them are minor, silly things. Somebody has a raccoon on their porch and calls the police, someone leaves their car unlocked in a marginal area and wonders why their cell phone etc ended up stolen.
This is a good community with good people. Unfortunately all you ever hear about is the bad stuff.
